John Callaghan

Lawyer Bencher Candidate -Toronto Region

Priorities

I have had the privilege of serving these past 8 years as a bencher. I am again seeking your support.

During the last 4 years, I have served as Chair of the Law Society’s Government Relations Committee (“GR”).

As the Chair of GR, I have advocated for the legal profession at Queen’s Park and on Parliament Hill. We have had some important successes, such as:

• An additional $100 million for Legal Aid Funding,
• Interim Federal funding for refugee hearings,
• Pushing back attempts to limit the use of contingency fees, and
• The expanding of the Unified Family Court.

I am seeking re-election to ensure the Law Society continues to have a strong and resolute voice in dealing with government.

In addition, more work is required to enhance equality and diversity within the profession to ensure that our profession provides a level playing field for all. There is also work to be done to ensure our profession is affordable for soles/smalls, accessible to young people and evolves as technology evolves.

I am proud of our profession and understand the crucial role our independent profession plays in society. If re-elected, I will continue to work hard to make sure that we have a profession that is independent and that is a source of pride for all our members. I hope you will re-elect me to do that work.
