Jerry B. Udell

Lawyer Candidate – Southwest Region

Priorities

As only one of three Solicitors elected to Convocation, I continue to be a staunch advocate and “voice” for Solicitors both inside and outside of the GTA. Also, as a member of the OBA Real Estate Executive, I will to continue to bring a Solicitor’s perspective to Convocation.

I believe that I can continue to use the knowledge and experience I have gained over 43 years of practice. Having managed a practice as both a partner in small firm, and in a large firm, I am now Senior Counsel in the Windsor office of a large multinational firm. I believe I understand the challenges that lawyers from a variety of practice areas and backgrounds continue to face. Most members of Convocation have little knowledge about the Solicitors practice of Real Estate law. I have been, and hope to continue to be, your voice in Convocation.

Background

I am a graduate of the University of Windsor Law School (1974) and was called to the Bar in 1976. I have had the privilege of representing you since 2015 as Bencher. I has been my honour to be the recipient of the Awards for Distinguished Service (2016) and Excellence in Real Estate (2017) from the OBA. I am the Co Chair with Sid Troister of the Solicitors working Group in Convocation. After being a partner in a mid size law firm for over 35 years, I am now Senior Counsel to Miller Canfield in Windsor

Convocation has adopted an aggressive platform to improve governance reform and reduce the number of Benchers and bureaucracy to make the LSO accessible to both the Public and the profession. Please see more about this at bencherblog.ca

Law Schools continue to graduate lawyers at an unprecedented rate without any guaranty that those who have invested their “blood, sweat, and tears” will have a job. It is unfair to them as well as the Public who need to know that those who represent them will be able to do so unfettered.

Artificial Intelligence in Legal Service Delivery

We need to embrace technology but remember that our main goal is to serve our clients with integrity and knowledge. If AI makes legal service more affordable and expeditious we need to move forward with that. Ignoring AI is foolish

While we can not correct the wrongs of the past in a short period of time, we should continue to take steps to acknowledge our mistakes and correct them.

I agree with the present policy regarding ABS. We need to ensure the integrity and independence of the practicing Bar.

This has been one of my major goals in Convocation. Truth in advertising is critical. We need a “level playing field” and need to ensure the public is not subject to “fish and bait” tactics or mislead by false advertising.

Scope of practice for paralegals and non-licensees

Paralegals have allowed access to justice for many who otherwise couldn’t afford it. As long as they are properly regulated by the LSO I endorse the role they play in the current system

FOLA asks: Thoughts on Funding Staffed Local Law Libraries

Expand to read Jerry's views
There is a big world outside of the GTA. In order to ensure access to Justice for all residents of Ontario, we must ensure the local libraries are adequately funded
