Tania Perlin

Lawyer Candidate – Central East Region

Priorities

We have all heard the saying: actions speak louder than words.
I am running to ensure that we are not just talking about change, but that CHANGE actually happens.
Ensure that sole practitioners and small firms have a voice in convocation. There are very few sole practitioners and small firms especially those practicing as solicitors. The real estate bar is not represented in this area.
Educating the public about what lawyers do so there are less complaints that do not have anything to do with quality of work, but mostly billings and just plain dissatisfaction.
Ensuring that regulations can actually apply in practice and not just in theory.
Increasing access to justice for litigants.
Ensuring that mental health issues area addressed so that law students and lawyers can work in an environment that supports both physical and mental health.
Students and those newly called to the bar need better support in finding articling jobs and permanent positions.
Ensuring that clients able to afford legal services and have access to legal representation and therefore the courts.
There are numerous questions below, which I feel in summary are answered above.

Background

I have been in private practice for over 25 years. My primary areas of practice are residential/commercial real estate, corporate, business, contract law, wills/estates, and franchising.
I have also practiced family and debtor/creditor law.
I am a Deputy Judge of small claims court central east.
I am a certified mediator for the Superior Court of Justice
I am a professor at Ryerson University and Seneca College respectively.
I am a Peer support for lawyers and students experiencing mental health issues.
I write for various legal publishers.
I am part of the National Self Represented Litigants Project (University of Windsor). My blogs post was the most popular in 2018.
I advocate for mental health and access to justice.
